CHRISTMAS CONCERT 2018

christmas

Sunday, December 9, 4:00 p.m.
Stoughton Opera House

The Stoughton Festival Choir and Stoughton City Band will return to the Opera House for this year’s holiday concert.

Festival Choir will rehearse from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. on Sundays, beginning October 7, at Covenant Lutheran Church, 1525 N. Van Buren, Stoughton. Our December 2 rehearsal will be held at the Opera House.

Director Beth Gardner has chosen a wide variety of Christmas music for our portion of the concert. We’ll revisit a couple of favorites from past performances, singing the Latin words of “Boar’s Head Carol” and the Latin rhythms of “Pat-a-Pan Salsa.” We’ll also reprise Mary McDonald’s spirited “Rise Up and See the King.”

New music includes “And Sweet Singing in the Choir” (a rhythmic setting of “The Holly and the Ivy”), Howard Helvey’s arrangement of “Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella” (featuring four-hand piano accompaniment), and the gently reflective “There’s Still My Joy.” We’ll round out the program with some big band swing, when a small jazz combo joins us on “Gettin’ in the Mood (for Christmas).”

The pieces selected for this concert will provide a challenge, but Beth promises they will also supply lots of fun. Each participant is asked to contribute $15.00 toward the cost of music.

Please plan to join us in celebrating the sounds of the season, and please pass this information on to friends who might enjoy singing with us! If you have questions, feel free to email stoughtonwifestivalchoir@ gmail.com.

Spring 2017

The spring concert rehearsals will start Sunday, February 12 at Christ Lutheran Church.  Please NOTE we and will be at a new time – 5:00 to 6:30pm.  This was requested by several members and so will give it a try this time.

The performance will be Sunday, April 23 at 4pm at the Stoughton Opera House.

Linda Kunz, our director for this performance, has selected music that has been part of her personal “soundtrack”. These are songs that we have hummed along to or part of our “background” – music that we have heard on television, movies, on the radio, record players, walkmans, iPods, mp3 players, the stores in the mall, in the elevator or while we sit “on hold”. Sometimes we are aware of the tune and can sing along and other times it is purely reaching our subconscious.

We will reuse “Twentiana” a choral montage of seven of the best tunes from the 1920s that we all will recognize (I Want to Be Happy; I’m Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover; Carolina in the Morning; Bye Bye Blackbird; Charleston; Tea for Two and Hallelujah!). Some of us sang this in one of the early Festival Choir concerts. For the women Songs of a Disney Princess (a medley of A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes; Part of Your World; A Whole New World; Colors of the Wind and Reflection). For the men a couple of Elvis tunes, “Don’t Be Cruel” and “Can’t Help Falling In Love”. Of course we need to include “Love Is All You Need” a Tribute to the Beatles (including All You Need Is Love; Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band; With a Little Help from My Friends; Imagine; Here Comes the Sun; A Hard Day’s Night; Ticket to Ride’ The Long and Winding Road’ When I’m Sixty-Four; Strawberry Fields Forever; Yesterday and She Loves You). We will conclude the program with Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”.

We are also considering adding a few instrumental pieces that will give everyone’s voices (and feet) a bit of a longer intermission break and add to the variety of the program.

We are asking for $15.00 music – there a quite a bit of new music being purchased for this program.

As always EVERYONE is welcome to come and sing with us – bring friends and family – this is going to be LOTS of FUN!
